What Icicles on Your Gutters Are Telling You
How to read them
An icicle is just frozen dripping water, and dripping water is normal in winter. The sun warms a roof at midday, a little snow melts, it runs to the cold eave and freezes overnight. A few short icicles the morning after a sunny, below-freezing day mean almost nothing. What matters is how many, how big, and whether there's ice sitting in the gutter behind them.
The pattern below is the difference between "normal winter" and "your attic is leaking heat."

The three things to check
Where they form. Icicles at one drip point are usually harmless. Icicles marching evenly across the entire lower roof edge tell you the whole roof is shedding meltwater — which only happens when the roof is warm, and a roof is warm because heat is leaking into the attic beneath it.
How big. Finger-length is daytime melt. Arm-length and thicker, day after day, means a lot of water is moving and refreezing — enough to feed a dam.
Is there ice in the gutter? This is the tell that separates a pretty icicle from a real problem. From the ground, look up: if the gutter itself is packed with a solid ridge of ice, meltwater has nowhere to go but back up the roof and under the shingles. That's an ice dam, and the icicles are just its runoff. A frozen downspout makes it worse by removing the gutter's only exit.
Look inside, too. The most important sign isn't on the roof — it's on your ceilings. Brown stains or damp patches near exterior walls, especially after a thaw, mean water is already getting past the dam and into the house.
The falling-icicle hazard
Separate from what they mean, big icicles are heavy and they let go without warning — usually during the midday thaw, exactly when people are walking underneath. A large icicle over a front door, a walkway, or basement steps is a genuine injury risk. Rope off or block the area below it. Don't stand under it to knock it down, and don't climb an icy ladder to reach it — knock it from the side with a long tool while standing clear, or leave it alone and fix the cause.
Why gutter guards don't cause them
A common winter myth: the guards caused the icicles. They didn't. Icicles and ice dams come from attic heat melting roof snow, which happens above the gutter line entirely — a house with no gutters at all still gets them. Guards add no heat. The actual fix
If your icicles are the harmless kind, there's nothing to fix. If they're the warning kind — big, everywhere, with ice packed in the gutter — the cure isn't at the gutter, it's in the attic:
