Gutter anatomy: the parts of a gutter system

At the roof edge
- Fascia
- The flat board that runs along the roof edge; the gutter hangs from it. Rotted fascia is the most common hidden change-order on an older NJ home.
- Soffit
- The underside panel between the fascia and the house wall. Its vents let the attic breathe.
- Drip edge
- An L-shaped metal flashing at the roof edge that directs water off the shingles and into the gutter, keeping it off the fascia.
- Gutter apron
- A wider bent flashing that tucks under the shingles and hangs over the back of the gutter so water can’t run behind it.
- Eave
- The lower edge of the roof that overhangs the wall — where the whole gutter assembly lives.
- Roof valley
- Where two roof planes meet and funnel a concentrated stream of water — often right at a gutter, where a splash guard helps.
The gutter (trough)
- Gutter / trough
- The channel itself that catches roof runoff and carries it to the downspouts.
- K-style (ogee)
- The flat-backed, crown-molding-shaped profile on most modern NJ homes — carries the most water for its width.
- Half-round
- A rounded, half-moon trough suited to older and historic homes; fewer inside corners to clog.
- Seamless
- A gutter roll-formed in one continuous run on site, so the only joints are at corners and outlets. The NJ standard.
- Sectional
- Pre-cut gutter sold in lengths and joined with seams — cheaper but seam-prone. Rare on quality installs.
- 5-inch vs 6-inch
- The width of the trough. 6-inch carries ~40% more water and is the upgrade for big or steep roofs and heavy tree runoff.
- Miter
- A corner joint where two gutter runs meet. Inside and outside miters are the spot most likely to leak.
- End cap
- The piece that closes off the open end of a gutter run.
- Pitch / slope
- The slight tilt built into a run (about 1/4 inch per 10 feet) so water flows to the outlet instead of standing.
Hangers & fasteners
- Hidden hanger
- A bracket clipped inside the gutter and screwed into the fascia — the strong, invisible modern way to hang a gutter.
- Spike & ferrule
- The old method: a long spike driven through a tube (ferrule) into the fascia. It works loose over time and is why old gutters sag.
- Aluminum gauge (.027 / .032)
- The thickness of the metal. Ask for .032 — it resists dents and holds shape far better than the .027 many bids default to.
The downspout system
- Outlet / drop
- The hole in the bottom of the gutter where water exits into the downspout.
- Downspout / leader
- The vertical pipe that carries water from the gutter down to the ground.
- Elbow
- The angled fitting that turns a downspout — at the top to reach the wall, at the bottom to direct water away.
- Downspout size (2×3 / 3×4)
- The cross-section of the downspout. 3×4 moves far more water and clogs less than the standard 2×3.
- Splash block
- The sloped block at a downspout’s base that spreads water and steers it away from the foundation.
- Downspout extension
- A pipe that carries water farther from the house — the single cheapest fix for a wet basement.
- Underground drain
- A buried pipe that routes downspout water to daylight or a dry well, well away from the foundation.
Materials & protection
- Aluminum
- The rust-proof, seamless-formed default for NJ — 20–30 years at a sane price.
- Copper
- A premium, decades-long metal that weathers to a patina; common on historic and estate homes.
- Zinc
- A long-life European-style metal that self-heals scratches — rare but excellent.
- Coil color / finish
- The baked-on aluminum finish. Dozens of standard colors let you match trim, roof, or make an accent.
- Gutter guard
- A cover that keeps debris out of the trough. Quality varies enormously by type.
- Micromesh
- A fine stainless screen — the only guard that reliably stops both oak leaves and pine needles in NJ.
- Heat cable
- A resistance cable run along the eave to melt channels through ice — a targeted fix for chronic ice dams.
- Snow guard
- A roof-mounted stop that keeps snow from avalanching off (especially metal roofs) and tearing the gutter away.
Common problems
- Ice dam
- A ridge of ice at the eave that backs meltwater up under the shingles. A heat-and-insulation problem more than a gutter one.
- Tiger stripes
- The dark vertical streaks on a gutter face — baked-on airborne grime, not a defect.
- Overflow
- Water sheeting over the front edge — usually a clog, an undersized gutter, or too few downspouts.
