HomeGuidesWho Owns the Reviews

One company owns a quarter of NJ's gutter reviews — at 4.5 stars

The finding: across the 94 North Jersey gutter companies we track — 19,102 Google reviews in all — a single national franchise, Ned Stevens, holds about 25% of every review. It would take the 76 smallest firms combined to match its review count. And at 4.5 stars, it's the lowest-rated of the region's seven biggest names. Review volume measures size, not quality.

The one-company skew

When we added up the Google reviews of every gutter company across our 31 North Jersey town lists, we expected a long tail. We didn't expect one company to swallow a quarter of the whole pile. Here's the top of the list by review count:

CompanyReviewsShare of all 19,102Rating
Ned Stevens Gutter Cleaning Gutter specialist~4,86425%4.5★
PJ Fitzpatrick Gutter specialist~2,55613%4.8★
Spotless Gutter Cleaning & Repair Gutter specialist~9355%4.8★
Splendor Roofing and Gutters Full-service~9265%5.0★

The top two firms — both large multi-state operators — together account for nearly 39% of every gutter review in North Jersey. The other 92 companies split the rest.

It takes 76 companies to equal one

The lopsidedness is easier to feel from the bottom up. The median gutter company in our data has just 71 reviews. The average is 203 — and the only reason the average is triple the median is that one 4,864-review giant drags it up. Ned Stevens alone has 68 times the reviews of the typical firm.

Put another way: line up our companies from smallest to largest and start adding. You have to combine the 76 smallest firms — more than three-quarters of the entire market — before their reviews add up to Ned Stevens' total. 31 of the 94 companies have fewer than 50 reviews; 65 have fewer than 100. This is a market of small local shops with one franchise sitting on top of the megaphone.

The biggest name is the lowest-rated of the big ones

Here's the part the review count hides. Filter to the seven companies with 500+ reviews — the region's true heavyweights — and rank them by rating instead of volume:

Big player (500+ reviews)ReviewsRating
Splendor Roofing and Gutters~9265.0★
Storm Guard Roof Repair~5785.0★
Ultra Pro Roof Repair~5085.0★
Hydro Eco Clean~5164.9★
PJ Fitzpatrick~2,5564.8★
Spotless Gutter Cleaning & Repair~9354.8★
Ned Stevens Gutter Cleaning~4,8644.5★

The company with the most reviews has the lowest rating of the group. That's not a scandal — it's math. Do enough jobs and you accumulate both more five-star reviews and more one-star ones; scale pulls an average toward the middle. But it's the exact opposite of the instinct most homeowners run on, which is "most reviews = safest choice."

Why volume isn't quality

A big review count tells you three real things — and none of them is "does good work on your house":

This is the same trap as the star rating itself — when 93% of companies are rated 4.8+, neither the number of reviews nor the average alone sorts the good from the great.

Is Ned Stevens bad? No — that's not the point

4.5 stars across nearly 5,000 reviews is a real record that most contractors would envy, and a franchise doesn't get that big by doing bad work. If a big national operator with a call center and a guarantee is what you want, it's a legitimate choice. The point isn't "avoid the big name." It's that "has the most reviews" and "is the best company for my house" are two different facts, and the review count quietly convinces people they're the same one.

FAQ

Which gutter company has the most Google reviews in North Jersey?

Ned Stevens Gutter Cleaning, by a wide margin. Across the 94 companies we track in 31 North Jersey towns, it holds about 4,864 Google reviews — roughly 25% of the 19,102 total. The next-largest, PJ Fitzpatrick, has about 2,556. Together those two account for nearly 39% of every gutter review in the region.

Is Ned Stevens a good gutter company?

A 4.5-star average over ~4,864 reviews is a genuinely strong record and reflects a large, long-established operation that clearly satisfies most customers. The honest caveat is only relative: in North Jersey 91% of the companies we track are rated 4.8 or higher, so 4.5 sits below the local norm, and several smaller specialists rate 4.9–5.0. Judge any company on the quote, the gutter focus, and recent reviews — not on how big the name is.

Do more reviews mean a better gutter company?

No. Review count measures size, tenure, and marketing reach — not quality. The median company in our data has just 71 reviews; the largest has 4,864. A 5.0-star local specialist with 120 gutter-specific reviews is often the better call for your fascia than a national franchise with thousands of mixed reviews. Weigh rating, recency, and whether the company actually specializes in gutters.

How many companies and reviews did you analyze?

We looked at 94 unique gutter companies across 31 towns in Bergen, Essex, Morris and Passaic counties, using public Google review data pulled July 2026 — 19,102 reviews in total. Counts and ratings drift over time, so we show the pull date on every page and re-pull periodically.
