Walk any New Jersey street and count the gutters: almost all of them are 5-inch K-style aluminum. That size became the residential default decades ago, and it never changed. The rain did.
New Jersey is one of the wettest, fastest-warming corners of the country for extreme rain. Read the second row twice. A storm that a mid-century engineer would have called a once-a-century event now shows up, on the Northeast record, roughly every 67 years — a figure a state-commissioned analysis cited from published research. The extremes aren't just bigger; they're more frequent.
Your gutter didn't get the memo
Here's the physical mismatch. Rain volume off a roof is simple arithmetic: about 623 gallons come off every 1,000 square feet of roof for each inch of rain, using the standard 0.623-gallons-per-square-foot conversion. A modest NJ roof can therefore shed several thousand gallons in a single heavy storm — and a two-inch-an-hour downpour, once rare, is now firmly on the table.

A 6-inch gutter holds roughly 40% more water than a 5-inch, and the 3x4 downspouts it pairs with move about twice the volume of the standard 2x3. The engineering reference is frozen in 2000
This isn't just a homeowner problem — it's baked into the rulebook. The extreme-rainfall values New Jersey uses for drainage and stormwater design come from NOAA Atlas 14, whose New Jersey data record ends in 2000. A 2021 report prepared for the NJDEP by the Northeast Regional Climate Center found that since 2000, more than 75% of NJ stations show larger 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year storm rainfall, with more than half of stations already about 2.5% higher than the Atlas 14 record. The reference many drainage choices lean on is running behind the actual rain.
Looking forward, the Fourth National Climate Assessment projects the Northeast's heaviest downpours could grow at least 40% further by late century, and Rutgers' State of the Climate work projects the 100-year, 24-hour storm rising on the order of 20–25% in northern NJ counties under a moderate-emissions path. What this means for your house
